my favorite bit of road. if I am within 20 miles of it will alter my route to include this stretch of road. Due to the open moorland visibility is good can get up some good speed - only ever seen police as you pass through Penderyn and Hirwaun Can be busy with 4 wheeled boxes on a summer saturday or sunday
Thank you for recommending this route. I rode it from Merthyr up to Elan and it was a great start of the run. It was remarkably quiet for a bank holiday and I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of idiots. Great road!
This is probably the best road in Wales, the sheep love it too :)
See another vid of this stunning road just posted above, enjoy
The A4059 is referenced in one of my other routes here but I think its deserving of its own recognition. Whenever were out we find ourselves trying to include this stretch in our route. A real fun stretch of road, but watch out for the sheep. They dont call it Dead Sheep Mountain for nothing. Ride safe guys.
A very fast and twisty 14k run. Can be combined as part of: Leave Brecon and take the A470 south towards Merthyr branching off onto the A4059 for a a very fast twisty 11 miles down into Hirwaun. From the roundabout take a left on the A465 back east to the A470 then south again past the Merthyr viaduct all the way down past Pontypridd - great chance to open up the bike for a few miles just watch out for the cameras now and then! Take the Caerphilly exit left onto the A468, up the hill (speed camera) then right onto the A469 (mountain road) for a great little blast over the mountain topbefore home - Travellers rest pub a great place to stop for a pint and some food. Follow this road down into Cardiff centre or, like me, if you live in North Cardiff take a left just before the bridge over the M4 for a drive through lisvane lanes and home!
View from top of A4059 looking south towards Cantref resivoir and the A470 on the left
