We used this route this year 18th june. What a ride> I got the idea from on this site and it was amazing. There were 9 of us and everyone enjoyed it we only used it as far as New Galloway as we were going further up Scotland that day. It was certainly better than going up the A74 etc. Some very good corners to keep the best of us entertained and enough scenery for the ones that prefer to chill out. I would recomend it to anyone.

I travel this road regularly and it is very good but there are a few things to watch out for. In the forest section close to Newton Stewart wet pine needles are a major surface hazard after a storm and if travelling this in winter there is often frost lurking on the road surface even on a sunny afternoon. Beware of travelling early morning, late in the evening and at night as deer are an ever present hazard. I once nearly had my head removed by a large low flying owl when travelling this road at night, it was a close thing. The road surface is being improved all the time but there are some sections that are a pretty rough from the logging trucks that operate along here but mainly good now. Some nice fast bends and some nasty little tricky deceptive devils. One especially, if travelling towards Newton Stewart, has caught out out many a car driver, look out for the tyre tracks into the ditch! If you are travelling to or from Stranraer this is well worth the diversion if you have the time.

New Galloway - Crocketford section
Fun route. But watch out for farms, farmers, heavy farm equipment.

Ive been in july-08. Good fast road with good views. Good for traveling with getting some curves at the same time. Recommended.

New Galloway - Crocketford section
I really like this road in summer 2008. In a sunday morning it had no traffic, and its fast enough to travel and interesting enough to biking.

Just watch out for cars in lay-by's. I've seen them parked in lay-by's right at the entrance or in the first available parking space so that no other vehicle could park in a manner which obstruct the view of the road.

you could well be right Yeti, police presence is OTT around here. Have done this road in the car, thought it would be great on the bike but the clear and present danger of plod is heartbreaking to say the least.

This route is worth going out of your way for. Leave the highly policed A75 at Crocketford and follow the A712 all the way to the A75 at Newton Stewart. Initialy you go through farmland with the usual hazards, this then gives way to forest, but all of it bends and twists the whole way. This route demands concentration for speed, and its probably where Foggy developed his eyes. Just be aware that although I have never seen the Police on this run, but policing in Dumfries & Galloway is strict.
