This route is incredibly varied terrain in a short distance. Red Valley is red rock desert to start, then suddenly the road goes from 70mph straights down to 25mph sharp corners climbing up the mountain (buffalo pass), very scenic mountain road with a few views at the top. Continuing west you drop down the back side of the pass, and right into a Arizona red rock canyon. Fantastic rocks and walls, amazing. If you're in the Four Corners area, I highly recommend this stretch of road. Road surface was very good, no gravel but obviously keep your eyes peeled if it's been raining. Check weather before going, I rode in September and assume it would be snowed in or closed in the winter.
