Interesting pub stops on this route are worthwhile for a drop in and rest awhile. Agree that Longreach is a nice town and an excellent overnight spot. Museum is good too as is main street bakery. Mt Isa mine tours are great and if you carry on towards NT there is a great lookout about 800 m off the main road (sealed small rd) that is worth a rest stop and this section has the BEST curves around the hills with lovely scenery. Further on it becomes flat and soooo boring and the Barkly Roadhouse becomes a haven. If you want a room/cabin here book!
Longreach the home of Qantas and much more is an interesting town. I got in at 11pm and found the town asleep. I did find a self serve petrol point that was fully automatic (credit card) and camped in the city provided (free) caravan facility. Up in the morning and a day of wind in your hair cruising. A great trip without a care in the world. The road, countryside and weather is just what life should be all about. Enjoy! Cloncurry and on to Mt Isa. Want to learn about mining ... you´re in the right place. By now you are probably used to seeing big rivers without a drop of water .... even trees growing up out of their beds.
