An excellent route that I have ridden many times. The section from Alston to Middleton is fast but watch out for the occasional deceiving corner and the sheep! Enjoy
Did this one today. Up the A6 from Kendal to Penrith, Then Hartside (A686) to Alston, wonderful, turn left to Middleton Tessdale, then over to Brough, down to Kirkby Stephen, where you can choose to go via Hawes to Devils Bridge, or Sedbergh to Devils Bridge, or shoot down to Tebay, then to Sedbergh and Devil's, you have a wonderful choice to end the day, with more grins aplenty! Why wait, it waiting for you to play upon!
Great road, i too make it an after work route, returning via Kirby Stephen to Hawes then onto Settle. Great corners with plenty of opportunity to open up the throttle. Devils Bridge can be busy. Beware if riding from Devils Brigde to Sedburgh on very wet days this road does flood in places!!!
Yep, agree totally, this road is truly awesome in every way. We are in the fortunate position of being able to ride it within a summer evening after work and that is a really good time to enjoy - almost no traffic! Still good on a Sunday however, but yes just avoid the general level of "knob" culture around Devil's Bridge. Do it soon, then do it again after!
The road from Devils Bridge to Sedbergh is twisty has reasonable visibilty and plenty of diverse corners. The section after Sedbergh is much more open and flowing better road surface and less likelyhood of sped traps. Devils Bridge area can be a chore on summer Sundays. I prefer early Saturday mornings - still plenty of bikes about but not too much in the way of tourist traffic. From Brough there is an excellent route to Alston via Middleton in Teesdale. From Alston you can travel to Haydon Bridge or Penrith on the A686 whichever way you choose the roads are excellent.
